What is a doula?


lady with babyflip6A doula provides continuous, non-medical support to the mother during before, during, and immediately after childbirth.  A doula  supports and empowers the mother using encouragement, pain-managemnt techniques, and information.  A doula does not replace, but rather compliments and encourages support by the father and other members of the birth team. Your doula will not make decisions for you, but will encourage you to advocate for your choices.

The word, “doula,” comes from the Greek word for the female slave or servant in an ancient Greek household who probably helped the lady of the house through her childbearing. The word has come to refer to “a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.” (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother)

 

Why use a doula?

Women who use a doula often haves shorter labors with fewer complications, and more positive feelings about their birth experience. A 2012 study found that continuous support during childbirth was linked with:

  • 28% decrease in risk of Cesarean section
  • 31% decrease in use of Pitocin
  • 12% increase in likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth
  • 34% decrease in dissatisfaction with birth experience
